Stop Smoking with Low Level Laser Therapy

What is Laser Therapy?

Low Level Laser Therapy is used in hospitals and clinics worldwide for a range of applications. ‘Soft’ non-thermal laser beams at specific wavelengths are passed into the body with photobiological effects. These include a physiological effect on cells optimizing healing, endorphin release and, when suitably applied, the photo-stimulation of acupuncture points. It is the latter acupuncture effect which is primary in smoking cessation applications, boosted by the endorphin release.

How does it work?

Cravings, lack of willpower and irritability are the three major obstacles to overcome when stopping smoking and are quite often the main reasons for starting again. As well as stimulating the acupuncture points relevant to addressing addiction, laser therapy has been proved to independently elevate endorphin levels (as nicotine does). Together these effects reduce or eliminate the physical cravings usually experienced, presenting a reduced challenge for the smoker’s willpower, better mood, and a fighting chance of quitting for good.

What does the treatment consist of?

Treatment sessions involve the smoker attending the clinic 3 times over one week. The clinician will hold the probe against the addiction related acupuncture points, most of which are located in the ear, forehead and hand areas.

Laser therapy for smoking cessation is administered within a broader support framework including counselling. This ensures that the social and psychological factors are addressed.

How successful is the treatment?

Laser therapy has a 10 year international track record with consistently high success rates for smoking cessation. Clinics regularly report figures of around 80% for initial smoking cessation with sustained levels a year on at around 60% of the original group.

Can anyone have laser therapy?

Most people can have laser therapy. A full history should be taken at the start of the treatment to ensure that no medical reason exists to prevent the therapy from going ahead. Likely exceptions might be those on certain existing medications or with deliberately suppressed immune systems, such as transplant patients.

You must want to be a non-smoker.

How many sessions do I need?

Practitioners differ in the detail of their preferred treatment regimes, refining these according to their particular experience, but research indicates that 4 sessions over 14 days, with 3 of these in the first 7 days is a highly effective programme.

Is it painful?

No. Some people may experience a localised tingling, but most will feel nothing apart, perhaps, from an often reported wonderful feeling of relaxation.

Is it safe?

Yes. Laser therapy is completely safe. The lasers used are officially categorised as class 3B, the beam from which does not cut or burn and has no negative side effects used correctly.
